Tieyou

Tieyou is a municipality located in the eastern part of Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The town covers an area of approximately 90 square kilometres and has a population of about 15,000 residents, according to the most recent census estimates. Its geography is characterised by a mix of low‑lying plains along the Izu Peninsula and hilly terrain with pockets of forested land. Tiered river valleys and nearby coastal waters have historically contributed to both agricultural development and local fishing activities.

The town's history dates back to the Edo period when it served as a small post town on a route connecting the inland regions with the Izu Peninsula. Following the Meiji restoration, Tieyou was incorporated into its modern municipal structure in 1901. The post‑war period saw significant industrial growth, sparked by the construction of a light rail line that linked it to larger urban centres such as Shizuoka City. More recently, the town has focused on sustainable tourism, promoting its natural hot springs and historic shrines.

Tieyou’s economy is a mix of traditional agriculture, small‑scale manufacturing and service sectors. Major agricultural products include the local variety of green tea, known in the region for its delicate aroma, as well as rice and citrus fruits. The town also hosts an annual cultural festival that attracts visitors from neighbouring municipalities, featuring traditional music, dance performances and local artisans.

Notable places of interest include the Ōtō Shrine, a Shinto shrine with a history spanning over 400 years, and the Tieyou Onsen, a cluster of hot springs with an estimated average temperature of 70°C. The town’s transportation network includes a regional bus service connecting to the Shizuoka Expressway, a local train station on the Izu-Hakone Line, and a network of regional roads that provide access to surrounding communities.
