The term combines the German words Tier (animal) and Stageniveaus (stage levels) and is employed in educational, scientific, and game design contexts to describe progression or maturation. A TierStageniveau system specifies criteria for each stage and the transitions between them.

Typically, tiers are defined by a set of measurable attributes, such as physical morphology, energy needs, reproductive status, behavior, and habitat use. A change from one tier to the next implies that the organism meets the predefined criteria for the new stage. Some implementations include intermediate sub-stages to capture gradual changes.

Applications include biology education, where tier stages illustrate ontogeny; zoological research, where staging aids comparison of life histories; and simulations or games, where tier levels balance gameplay by restricting abilities or resources according to stage.
