It contrasts with surface-oriented presentation by aiming to make visible underlying contexts, structures and processes, such as historical developments, materiality, production conditions and social implications.

Proponents argue that depth-oriented mediation supports media literacy by helping audiences recognize complexity and agency in media objects, while remaining explicit about the mediation choices involved.
