Thunderboltliitäntöjä is the Finnish term for Thunderbolt ports. Thunderbolt is a high-speed interface standard developed by Intel in collaboration with Apple. It combines PCI Express (PCIe) for data transfer and DisplayPort for video output into a single, versatile connection. Thunderbolt technology allows for high-speed data transfer, high-resolution display output, and power delivery over a single cable.

The Thunderbolt interface utilizes the USB-C connector, which is reversible and widely adopted across many devices. This unification simplifies connectivity, as one port can serve multiple functions. Thunderbolt supports daisy-chaining multiple devices, meaning several peripherals can be connected in series to a single Thunderbolt port on the host computer. This reduces the need for multiple cables and hubs, streamlining the user experience.

Thunderbolt technology has evolved through several generations, with each iteration offering increased bandwidth and capabilities. Thunderbolt 3, for example, provided up to 40 Gbps of bidirectional bandwidth, supporting dual 4K displays or a single 5K display. Thunderbolt 4 builds upon this, offering a minimum guaranteed bandwidth of 40 Gbps and enhanced capabilities for connectivity and display support, including support for two 4K displays at 60Hz or one 8K display. Thunderbolt 4 also mandates specific features like Wake from Sleep and DMA protection. Thunderbolt 5, announced in 2023, promises even greater bandwidth and new features for next-generation connectivity.
