Thrusterdrivning, often translated as thruster propulsion, refers to a system that uses thrusters to generate force and propel a vehicle. Thrusters are small, typically low-thrust engines that can be fired individually or in groups to control a spacecraft's orientation or provide small changes in velocity. They are crucial for maneuvering in space, where traditional aerodynamic control surfaces are ineffective.

The fundamental principle behind thruster propulsion is Newton's third law of motion: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Thrusters expel a propellant, such as gas or liquid, at high speed in one direction. This expulsion creates a reactive force that pushes the vehicle in the opposite direction.

Common types of thrusters include cold gas thrusters, which use a pressurized inert gas like nitrogen, and monopropellant thrusters, which use a single propellant that decomposes catalytically to produce hot gas. More complex systems, like bipropellant thrusters, use two propellants that react chemically to generate higher thrust. Electric propulsion systems, such as ion thrusters, use electrical energy to accelerate a propellant to very high velocities, offering high efficiency but low thrust.

Thrusterdrivning is essential for a variety of space missions. It is used for attitude control, allowing spacecraft to point accurately towards targets or orient solar panels. It also facilitates orbital maneuvers, such as station-keeping to maintain a specific orbit, de-orbiting at the end of a mission, or performing orbital transfers.
