Thioanhydrides

Thioanhydrides are a class of chemical compounds characterized by the functional group R-C(S)S-R', where R and R' are organic substituents. They can be considered the sulfur analogs of anhydrides of carboxylic acids, where oxygen atoms are replaced by sulfur atoms. This means a thioanhydride can be formally thought of as derived from two molecules of a thioacid (RCSOH) by the elimination of a molecule of water. Alternatively, they can be viewed as having a central sulfur atom bridging two carbonyl groups that have been sulfurized.

The nomenclature for these compounds can sometimes be confusing. They are often referred to as dithioesters or dithiocarboxylic anhydrides, though the term thioanhydride is also commonly used. The synthesis of thioanhydrides typically involves the reaction of thioacyl halides with alkali metal thiolates or the dehydration of thioacids. These reactions often require careful control of conditions due to the reactivity of the sulfur-containing intermediates.

Thioanhydrides exhibit a range of chemical properties influenced by the presence of the two C=S bonds and the bridging sulfur atom. They can undergo hydrolysis to form thioacids and can participate in various nucleophilic addition and substitution reactions. Their applications are less widespread than their oxygenated counterparts, but they find use as intermediates in organic synthesis, particularly in the preparation of sulfur-containing heterocyclic compounds and in the modification of polymers. The handling of thioanhydrides often requires precautions due to their potential odor and reactivity.
