The Þróunarmarkmiðin, often translated as the Development Goals, were a series of targets adopted by the United Nations in 2000. They aimed to address pressing global issues and improve the lives of people worldwide. These eight goals encompassed a broad range of development challenges, including poverty reduction, universal education, gender equality, child mortality reduction, and improved maternal health. The Þróunarmarkmiðin also sought to combat diseases like HIV/AIDS and malaria, ensure environmental sustainability, and foster a global partnership for development.
Each goal had specific, measurable targets and deadlines, providing a framework for international cooperation and national
