Thermoelektrikern is a term that can refer to a few different concepts, primarily related to the field of thermoelectricity. Thermoelectricity is the direct conversion of temperature differences to electric voltage and vice versa. A thermoelectric device, often referred to as a thermoelectric generator or cooler, utilizes this phenomenon. The core principle is the Seebeck effect, where a temperature gradient across a conductive material generates an electric current. Conversely, the Peltier effect describes the heating or cooling that occurs when an electric current is passed through a junction of two dissimilar conductors.

Devices employing thermoelectricity find applications in niche areas. Thermoelectric generators, for instance, are used in situations where waste heat is available, such as in power generation from industrial processes or in remote sensing equipment powered by ambient temperature differences. Thermoelectric coolers, on the other hand, are employed for localized cooling in applications like portable refrigerators, electronic component cooling, or in scientific instruments requiring precise temperature control. The efficiency of thermoelectric devices is generally lower compared to conventional technologies, which has limited their widespread adoption, though ongoing research aims to improve their performance and cost-effectiveness.
