Testkövületek, a Hungarian term often translated as "body fossils," refers to the preserved remains of ancient organisms. These fossils are the direct evidence of past life, offering scientists insights into the morphology, anatomy, and appearance of extinct creatures. Unlike trace fossils, which document biological activity such as footprints or burrows, body fossils represent the physical substance of an organism, including bones, shells, teeth, or even entire bodies.

The process of fossilization, which transforms organic matter into rock, is a complex and rare event. It typically occurs when an organism is rapidly buried in sediment, preventing decomposition and scavenging. Over geological time, minerals in the surrounding sediment replace the organic material, creating a fossilized replica. The type of preservation varies widely, from permineralization, where minerals fill the porous structure of bones, to recrystallization, where the original mineral structure is altered. In exceptional cases, soft tissues can be preserved, such as through mummification in arid environments or by being trapped in amber or tar.
