Teräksenvalmistuksessa, also known as steelmaking, is the process of producing steel from iron ore and scrap. It is a crucial industrial process that underpins many modern technologies and infrastructures. The primary goal is to remove impurities from the raw materials and achieve the desired chemical composition and mechanical properties of the final steel product.

The most common method for steelmaking today is the basic oxygen steelmaking (BOS) process. This involves blowing pure oxygen through molten pig iron in a converter. The oxygen reacts with carbon and other impurities, oxidizing them into gases or slag. High-purity oxygen is essential, and the process is rapid, typically taking less than an hour to convert a batch of molten iron into steel.

Another significant method is the electric arc furnace (EAF) process. This method is particularly effective for recycling steel scrap. An electric arc generated between graphite electrodes and the metal charge melts the scrap. EAFs offer greater flexibility in terms of raw material input and can produce a wider range of steel grades, including high-alloy steels.

Following the primary steelmaking process, secondary refining steps are often employed to further purify the steel and adjust its composition. These steps can include vacuum degassing, ladle metallurgy, and desulfurization. These processes are critical for producing high-quality steels with specific properties, such as those required for automotive, aerospace, or construction applications. The temperature, atmosphere, and chemical additions are carefully controlled throughout the entire steelmaking process to ensure the production of safe, reliable, and high-performance steel.
