Teoriteoritilnærmingen, which translates to "theory-theory approach," is a concept primarily discussed within the field of developmental psychology. It posits that children develop a theory of mind, the ability to attribute mental states to oneself and others, through a process akin to scientific theorizing. This perspective suggests that children actively construct and refine mental models of how the world works, including the beliefs, desires, intentions, and emotions of others.

Instead of simply acquiring knowledge passively, children are seen as engaging in hypothesis testing and data collection. They observe behaviors, listen to explanations, and experiment with social interactions. Based on these experiences, they formulate hypotheses about mental states and their influence on actions. When observations contradict their current "theories," they revise them, much like a scientist adjusts a theory in light of new evidence. This iterative process allows for the gradual development of sophisticated understanding of others' inner lives.

Key elements of the theory-theory approach include the idea of internal representations, the use of inductive and deductive reasoning, and the impact of social interaction and language on theory formation. While influential, the theory-theory approach is not without its critics, with some arguing for alternative explanations for theory of mind development, such as simulation theory or innate modules.
