A tenon saw is a type of handsaw used primarily for cutting tenons, which are projections on the end of a piece of wood designed to fit into a corresponding hole or mortise. These saws are characterized by a relatively thin blade with fine teeth, typically measuring between 10 and 14 teeth per inch (TPI). The blade is supported by a stiffening strip of metal along the top edge, known as a spine or stiffener, which helps prevent the thin blade from flexing or bending during use and allows for more precise cuts.

Tenon saws usually have a pistol-grip handle, designed for comfort and control. The overall length of the blade can vary, but they are generally shorter than panel saws or ripsaws, making them suitable for detailed work and accurate joinery. The teeth are usually set to cut on the pull stroke, which provides better control for the user compared to saws that cut on the push stroke.

The primary advantage of using a tenon saw is its ability to produce clean, square, and precise cuts required for accurate joinery, such as in mortise and tenon joints, dovetails, and rabbets. The fine teeth leave a smoother finish compared to coarser saws, often reducing the need for extensive sanding. While specialized for tenons, they can also be used for other fine woodworking tasks where precision is paramount.
