Temppeliaukios

Temppeliaukio Church, also known as the Rock Church, is a Lutheran parish church in the Töölö district of Helsinki, Finland. It was designed by architects Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen and consecrated in 1969. The church is renowned for its unique architectural design, being built directly into solid rock.

The interior of Temppeliaukio Church is a circular space with a domed copper roof. The walls are the natural rock of the excavation, left largely unadorned. Natural light filters into the sanctuary through a glass dome encircling the roof. The acoustics within the church are exceptional, making it a popular venue for concerts and musical performances.

Construction of the church began in 1966. The site was originally a quarry, and the architects chose to preserve much of the natural rock. The excavation created a cavernous space, which was then covered by a concrete dome reinforced with steel. The organ, installed in 1975, is also a significant feature.

Temppeliaukio Church is one of Helsinki's most visited landmarks and a significant example of modern Finnish architecture. It serves as a place of worship for the local congregation and is also a popular tourist attraction due to its distinctive design and peaceful atmosphere. The church is open to visitors for both religious services and general sightseeing.
