Temporalitet

Temporalitet, or temporality, refers to the qualitative and structured way in which time is experienced, organized, and interpreted across different domains. It encompasses both the subjective feeling of time and the objective patterns through which time is measured and made meaningful in social life, culture, and discourse.

In philosophy, temporality is a central problem in phenomenology and existentialism. It emphasizes that time is not merely a sequence of clock ticks but a lived experience. Husserl described time as arising from inner time-consciousness, with a flow that includes retention of the just-passed and protention toward the upcoming, fused into a present moment. Heidegger treated temporality as the fundamental condition of human existence (Dasein), insisting that the past, present, and future are interrelated aspects of being-toward-death, authenticity, and temporal experience.

In the social sciences, temporality is often discussed in terms of multiple coexisting timescales. Clock time and calendar-based time intersect with social time, historical time, and biographical time. Modernization, work organization, and globalization can reshape temporal regimes, leading to experiences such as accelerated pace, punctuated routines, or deferred futures. Rituals, memory, and tradition encode collective temporalities that give communities a sense of continuity.

In the arts and linguistics, temporality appears in narrative time, tempo, pacing, and the use of tense and aspect to convey temporal relations. Across disciplines, temporalitet is a lens for examining how humans experience, organize, and communicate time in diverse contexts.
