Tempisque

The Tempisque is a river in northwestern Costa Rica. It is the third longest river in the country and the most important river in the Guanacaste Province. The Tempisque River basin covers approximately 3,400 square kilometers and is a vital part of the region's ecosystem and economy.

The river originates in the Tilarán mountain range and flows through a predominantly agricultural area, characterized by cattle ranches and croplands. Its waters are crucial for irrigation, supporting the cultivation of crops such as rice, sugarcane, and various fruits. The Tempisque also plays a significant role in hydroelectric power generation, with several dams located along its course contributing to Costa Rica's energy supply.

One of the most notable features of the Tempisque River is its proximity to the Palo Verde National Park. This park is a Ramsar site, recognized for its wetland ecosystems. The river's floodplain and associated wetlands are essential habitats for a diverse array of wildlife, including numerous species of birds, reptiles, and mammals. The park serves as a critical breeding ground and migratory stopover for many avian species, making it a popular destination for ecotourism and birdwatching.

The Tempisque River's delta empties into the Gulf of Nicoya, an important marine estuary. The interaction between the freshwater of the river and the saltwater of the gulf creates a unique environment supporting mangrove forests and a rich marine biodiversity.
