Telomeereja

Telomeereja is a term used in speculative discussions to denote a proposed class of telomere-associated elements that could influence telomere maintenance. It can refer to short DNA sequences situated in subtelomeric regions or to RNA transcripts expressed from those regions, envisioned as a supplementary layer of telomere regulation beyond telomerase and the conventional shelterin complex. The concept is not established in mainstream genetics but appears in theoretical models and some literature on genome organization.

In proposed models, telomeereja elements are non-coding and capable of forming secondary structures, binding to telomere-binding proteins, or serving as platforms for chromatin modifiers. They are hypothesized to modulate telomere accessibility to telomerase, promote or restrain recombination-based maintenance (ALT), or influence the chromatin state of subtelomeric domains.

Current evidence for telomeereja is largely speculative. Most support comes from computational analyses and indirect signals in sequencing data, with little direct experimental confirmation. The detection is complicated by the repetitive nature of telomeric and subtelomeric DNA, and researchers debate whether observed signals reflect genuine telomere-adjacent elements or technical artifacts.

If real, telomeereja could vary across taxa with different telomere maintenance strategies and might contribute to genome stability and aging phenotypes.
