Telestos

Telestos is a genus of small, brightly colored frogs belonging to the family Hylidae. These amphibians are native to the Amazon rainforest in South America. They are characterized by their slender bodies, long legs, and adhesive toe pads, which allow them to climb effectively on trees and other vegetation.

The coloration of telestos frogs varies widely, with many species exhibiting vibrant patterns of green, yellow, blue, and red. This striking coloration often serves as a warning to predators, indicating that the frog may be toxic. Some species possess toxins in their skin that can cause irritation or more severe reactions in animals that attempt to eat them.

Telestos frogs are primarily nocturnal, spending their days hidden in foliage or under bark. At night, they become active, foraging for insects and other small invertebrates. Their breeding habits typically involve laying eggs in water, often in bromeliad tanks or other small water collections found in trees. The tadpoles then develop in these aquatic environments before metamorphosing into adult frogs. Due to their specialized habitat and sensitivity to environmental changes, telestos frogs are often considered indicator species for the health of the Amazonian ecosystem. Their populations can be affected by deforestation and habitat degradation.
