They are also categorized by their focal length, which determines the magnification and field of view. Telescopes can be mounted on equatorial or altazimuth mounts, which allow for smooth tracking of celestial objects.

Modern telescopes often incorporate advanced technologies such as CCD cameras for astrophotography, spectrographs for analyzing light, and adaptive optics for correcting atmospheric distortions.
