Teilstreuung

Teilstreuung, a German term, translates to partial scattering or segmental scattering. In a physics context, it refers to a phenomenon where a wave or particle is scattered by an object, but only a portion of the incident energy or wave is affected. This contrasts with total scattering, where the entire incident wave or particle is redirected. Teilstreuung can occur in various physical scenarios, including light scattering by particles, acoustic wave scattering by obstacles, or electron scattering by atoms.

The extent of teilstreuung depends on several factors, such as the size and shape of the scattering object relative to the wavelength of the incident radiation or particle, and the material properties of the scatterer. For instance, in optics, smaller particles tend to exhibit Rayleigh scattering, which is a form of teilstreuung where only certain wavelengths are scattered preferentially. Larger particles, on the other hand, can lead to Mie scattering, a more complex form of teilstreuung that is less dependent on wavelength.
