Teilsatzes

Teilsatz (plural Teilsätze) is a term in German grammar used to describe a clause that forms a functional unit within a larger sentence and cannot normally stand alone as a complete sentence. Teilsätze serve as building blocks in Satzgefüge, complex sentences that combine several clauses. In standard terminology, a Teilsatz is a constituent of the larger sentence; when a sentence contains at least two Teilsätze, it is called a Satzgefüge.

Most Teilsätze are Nebensätze (subordinate clauses) introduced by subordinating conjunctions such as dass, ob, weil, obwohl, or by relative pronouns. Other Teilsätze include Infinitivsätze (infinitive clauses) and Partizipialsätze (participial clauses). Each type has characteristic syntax and functions within the sentence.

Syntax and word order depend on the type of Teilsatz. Nebensätze typically place the finite verb at the end, while Infinitivsätze use the infinitive, often with zu, and Partizipialsätze employ participles to add circumstantial information. Comma rules in German reflect the separation of Teilsätze from the main clause, especially in Nebensätze and in clauses introduced by infinitives or participles when they function as distinct units within a Satzgefüge.

Examples illustrate the range of Teilsätze: Ich glaube, dass er heute kommt. (Nebensatz) Er beschloss, früher zu gehen. (Infinitivsatz) Vom Wind gequält, blieb das Boot am Strand liegen. (Partizipialsatz)
