Techiyah

Techiyah is a Hebrew term that translates roughly as resurrection or revival. In Jewish religious thought, it most commonly refers to techiyat ha-metim, the future restoration of the dead, a belief associated with the world to come and the Messianic era. The term appears in classical sources and continues to be discussed in modern Jewish theology, liturgy, and philosophy.

Scriptural and rabbinic basis: The Hebrew Bible contains verses that have been interpreted as alluding to resurrection, notably Daniel 12:2, which speaks of many who sleep in the dust awakening, some to everlasting life. Rabbinic literature develops the idea more fully; the Talmud and later authorities treat techiyat ha-metim as an eschatological event that will occur at the end of days. Over the centuries, this concept has been reaffirmed, debated, and elaborated within various Jewish traditions.

Philosophical and denominational perspectives: Definitions and emphasis vary. Traditional rabbinic and medieval Jewish sources generally affirm a physical resurrection of the dead, and Maimonides lists belief in the resurrection among the core tenets of faith. Later thinkers have offered symbolic or metaphorical readings that emphasize renewal of life, virtue, or memory rather than a literal bodily revival. In contemporary thought, some liberal or secular readings interpret the idea in broader terms of moral or communal renewal.
