Taxonomiske, or taxonomic, refers to taxonomy, the scientific practice of naming, describing, and classifying living organisms and other entities. The term is used in Danish, Norwegian, and some Scandinavian languages to denote the systematic organization of biodiversity.

Biology uses a hierarchical framework beginning with domain and kingdom down to phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. The standard method employs binomial nomenclature, established by Carl Linnaeus, where each species receives a two-part Latin name.

Modern taxonomy combines traditional morphology with phylogenetics, genetics, and computational methods. Cladistics groups organisms by common ancestry, while molecular data—DNA, RNA, and protein sequences—often reveal relationships not evident from morphology alone. DNA barcoding assists species identification in field work and conservation.

Taxonomic governance is coordinated by formal codes that regulate naming: the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) for animals, and codes for plants, algae, fungi (ICN) and other groups. Type specimens anchor names; revisions occur when new evidence prompts reclassification or synonymization.

Taxonomies are not limited to biology. In information science, taxonomies and ontologies organize knowledge in libraries, databases, and e-commerce, enabling consistent tagging, search, and data integration.

Challenges include differing species concepts, cryptic species, and taxonomic inflation. Taxonomic decisions can be controversial and subject to revision as data accumulate.

Taxonomy underpins biodiversity assessment, conservation planning, ecology, and environmental policy by providing stable names and understanding evolutionary relationships.
