Tasoitusalgoritmit, or hierarchical clustering algorithms, are a class of unsupervised machine learning algorithms used to group similar data points into clusters. These algorithms do not require labeled data and are particularly useful for exploratory data analysis and pattern discovery. The primary goal of hierarchical clustering is to build a hierarchy of clusters, which can be represented as a dendrogram, a tree-like diagram that illustrates the arrangement of the clusters produced by the algorithm.

There are two main types of hierarchical clustering algorithms: agglomerative and divisive. Agglomerative hierarchical clustering starts with each data point as a separate cluster and iteratively merges the closest pairs of clusters until all points belong to a single cluster or a predefined number of clusters is reached. Divisive hierarchical clustering, on the other hand, begins with all data points in a single cluster and recursively splits the clusters into smaller ones based on certain criteria.

The choice of distance metric and linkage criterion is crucial in hierarchical clustering. Common distance metrics include Euclidean distance, Manhattan distance, and cosine similarity. Linkage criteria determine the distance between clusters and include single linkage (minimum distance between any two points in the clusters), complete linkage (maximum distance between any two points in the clusters), and average linkage (average distance between all points in the clusters).

Hierarchical clustering algorithms are widely used in various fields, including bioinformatics, image analysis, and market research. They provide a clear and intuitive way to visualize the relationships between data points and can be particularly useful when the number of clusters is not known in advance. However, they can be computationally intensive for large datasets and may not scale well with the number of data points.
