Tasohöylät

Tasohöylät are hand tools used for planing or smoothing surfaces, particularly in woodworking and construction. The name "tasohöylä" translates directly from Finnish as "level plane" or "flat plane." These tools are characterized by a flat sole that glides over the material, and a sharp blade, often called a cutter or iron, set at an angle to shave off thin layers of wood. The depth of the cut is adjustable, allowing the user to control the amount of material removed.

The primary purpose of a tasohöylä is to flatten uneven surfaces, remove unwanted material, and achieve a smooth finish. They are essential for tasks such as preparing lumber for joinery, fitting doors and windows, and creating precise surfaces for furniture making. Different types of tasohöylät exist, varying in size, shape, and intended use. Smaller planes, often called block planes, are suitable for one-handed operation and detail work, while larger bench planes are designed for broader surfaces and heavier material removal. The blade is typically sharpened and honed to a very fine edge to ensure efficient and clean cutting. Maintaining the sharpness of the blade and the flatness of the sole are crucial for effective planing.
