Tasamots

The Tasamots are an indigenous, seafaring community living on the Tasamot Archipelago in the western sea. They have a distinct language, customs, and a maritime economy. The population is estimated in the low thousands across several islands.

Geography and environment: The archipelago comprises about a dozen coral islands with lagoons, mangroves, and reefs. The tropical climate features wet and dry seasons, and seasonal monsoons shape fishing routes and navigation.

Language and culture: The Tasamot language has regional dialects. Community life centers on kin-based households, reef fishing, and crafts such as net weaving, canoe carving, and basketry. A yearly maritime festival highlights song, dance, and shell ornaments.

History and governance: Archaeological and oral histories indicate long-standing seafaring settlement. Contact with traders began in the early modern period, and later political changes incorporated the archipelago into a national framework while affirming local rights and customary councils.

Economy: The economy is primarily subsistence-based, with fishing as the main activity. Small-scale agriculture, coconut products, and crafts support livelihoods. Inter-island trade and limited eco-tourism also contribute to income.

Education and preservation: Efforts promote bilingual education in Tasamot language and the national language, along with programs to preserve traditional knowledge, music, boat-building, and other crafts. Diaspora communities support cultural preservation and exchange.
