Tasajännitevirrat, also known as direct current (DC) electricity, refers to the unidirectional flow of electric charge. Unlike alternating current (AC), where the direction of electron flow periodically reverses, DC electricity flows consistently in one direction. This is typically achieved by a power source that maintains a constant voltage difference across a circuit.

Common sources of direct current include batteries, solar cells, and DC power supplies. Batteries store chemical energy and convert it into electrical energy, providing a continuous DC output. Solar cells, which utilize the photovoltaic effect, also generate DC electricity when exposed to sunlight. DC power supplies, often used to convert AC from the mains to DC, are essential for powering many electronic devices.

The historical development of electricity saw a debate between proponents of DC and AC. Thomas Edison was a strong advocate for DC, envisioning a widespread DC distribution network. However, AC's ability to be easily transformed to different voltage levels for efficient long-distance transmission eventually led to its dominance in power grids. Nevertheless, DC remains crucial for numerous applications, particularly in electronics, telecommunications, and electric vehicles. Many electronic devices contain internal circuitry that requires DC power, even if they are plugged into an AC outlet, necessitating the use of AC-to-DC converters.
