Tartományú

"Tartományú" is a Hungarian term that translates to "territorial" or "regional" in English. It is commonly used to describe administrative divisions within Hungary that have a certain degree of autonomy or self-governance. The term is often used to distinguish these divisions from other types of administrative units, such as counties (megyék) or cities with county rights (megyei jogú városok).

The concept of "tartományú" regions is rooted in Hungary's historical and political context. After the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, Hungary was reorganized into counties. However, during the communist era in the 20th century, some regions were granted "tartományú" status to provide them with a higher degree of autonomy. This status was maintained after the fall of communism in 1989.

Today, there are seven regions in Hungary with "tartományú" status: Bács-Kiskun, Baranya, Békés, Csongrád, Fejér, Hajdú-Bihar, and Heves. These regions have their own regional assemblies and governments, which have the power to make decisions on local matters. However, the central government in Budapest retains ultimate authority over these regions.

The "tartományú" status is a unique feature of Hungary's administrative structure and reflects the country's efforts to balance centralization and decentralization. It allows for a degree of regional self-governance while ensuring that the central government maintains control over key areas such as defense, foreign policy, and national security.
