Tanzimat
The Tanzimat, or Tanzimat reforms, was a period of extensive state-led modernization in the Ottoman Empire that roughly spanned from 1839 to 1876. It arose from internal and external pressures—military crises, administrative corruption, and European diplomatic and technological influence—and aimed to strengthen central authority, modernize the bureaucracy, and create a more uniform legal framework for a diverse subject population.
