Tagesordnung

Tagesordnung is a German term that refers to the list of topics to be discussed at a meeting, in effect the meeting’s agenda or order of the day. It outlines the sequence of items to be considered and often indicates the expected order of discussion, time allocations, and speakers. The items are commonly called Tagesordnungspunkte or, in shorter form, Traktanden.

The preparation and adoption of the Tagesordnung typically involve the chair, the secretariat, or a governing committee. In many settings the agenda is published in advance to allow participants to prepare. During the meeting, items are taken up in the stated order, and the agenda may be amended by formal votes or at the discretion of the chair, especially to accommodate urgent matters, often through procedures for adding or delaying items.

Tagesordnung is a standard term across German-speaking regions and is used in parliaments, municipal councils, corporate boards, and other deliberative bodies. In some contexts the synonym Traktandenliste is used, particularly in Switzerland and Austria. While the concept is common, procedural rules for setting, amending, and adopting the Tagesordnung can vary by institution and jurisdiction, reflecting different parliamentary or organizational procedures.

In practice, the Tagesordnung serves to structure discussion, allocate time, and provide transparency about what will be considered. It helps participants prepare, allows the audience to follow the proceedings, and supports orderly decision-making. A typical agenda item may cover purpose, background, discussion, and a proposed resolution or decision.
