Tacticityn

Tacticityn is a term used in polymer science to describe a proposed quantitative descriptor of stereochemical regularity along a polymer backbone. It is intended to complement the traditional classifications of tacticity—isotactic, syndiotactic, and atactic—by providing a scalar measure of local stereoregularity that can apply to polymers with mixed or imperfect sequences. The concept is not yet standard across the literature and is mainly encountered in theoretical discussions or teaching contexts.

Operationally, tacticityn can be defined as a dimensionless value between 0 and 1 that reflects the ensemble-average alignment of stereocenters along the chain. A value near 1 would indicate highly regular, isotactic-like sequences, while a value near 0 would indicate maximal irregularity or atactic-like randomness. Values in between describe intermediate or heterogeneous microdomains of differing stereochemistry. In practice, the exact definition can vary, and researchers may incorporate considerations such as blockiness, chain length, and the scale of observation.

Measurement approaches typically involve spectroscopic and diffraction techniques. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods can quantify local stereochemical environments, while differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) relate tacticityn to crystallinity and crystalline fraction. Computational methods, including Monte Carlo or molecular dynamics simulations, can estimate tacticityn from modeled stereocenter arrangements.

Status and use: tacticityn remains a largely exploratory concept rather than a standardized metric. It may be useful for comparing polymers with complex or heterogeneous tacticity, but its definitions and interpretation are not yet universally agreed upon.
