Tablemapping

Tablemapping refers to the process of transforming data from one or more source tables into a single target table. This is a common task in data warehousing, data integration, and database migration. The primary goal of tablemapping is to restructure, combine, and potentially enrich data to meet the requirements of a new data model or application.

The process typically involves identifying the corresponding columns in the source and target tables. This correspondence, often called a mapping rule, dictates how data from a source column should be placed into a target column. Mapping rules can be straightforward, such as a direct copy of a column's value, or more complex. Complex rules might involve data transformations like aggregation (e.g., summing values), calculations (e.g., multiplying quantities by prices), data type conversions, string manipulations, or conditional logic (e.g., assigning a specific value based on a condition).

Tools and techniques for tablemapping range from simple SQL `INSERT INTO ... SELECT FROM` statements for basic transformations to sophisticated Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) or Extract, Load, Transform (ELT) tools. These tools provide visual interfaces and pre-built transformation functions to define and execute complex mapping logic. The accuracy and efficiency of tablemapping are crucial for ensuring data integrity and the success of downstream data processes.
