Tabernanthe

Tabernanthe is a genus of flowering plants in the family Apocynaceae. This genus is native to tropical Africa. The most well-known species within this genus is Tabernanthe iboga, which is famous for its psychoactive properties.

Tabernanthe iboga is a shrub that grows in the rainforests of Central Africa. The plant's root bark contains ibogaine, an indole alkaloid that has been used traditionally by indigenous peoples for spiritual and medicinal purposes. In modern times, ibogaine has been explored for its potential in treating addiction, particularly to substances like opioids and cocaine. However, its use is associated with significant risks, including cardiac arrhythmias and potential for fatal overdose.

The genus Tabernanthe also includes other species, though they are less studied and not as widely known as Tabernanthe iboga. These species generally share morphological characteristics with T. iboga, typically being shrubs or small trees found in similar West and Central African habitats. Research into the chemical compounds and ethnobotanical uses of other Tabernanthe species is ongoing but limited compared to the extensive focus on T. iboga. The conservation status of species within the Tabernanthe genus can vary, with some facing threats due to habitat loss and overharvesting, particularly T. iboga for its psychoactive root bark.
