TRRSstyle

TRRSstyle refers to a common wiring standard for 3.5mm (1/8 inch) audio jacks, particularly those found on smartphones and other portable electronic devices. The "TRRS" acronym stands for Tip, Ring, Ring, Sleeve, which describes the four conductive sections of the plug. This design allows for the transmission of both stereo audio (left and right channels) and a monaural microphone signal over a single connector.

In a standard TRRS connection, the Tip carries the left audio channel, the first Ring carries the right audio channel, the second Ring typically carries the microphone signal, and the Sleeve serves as the common ground. This configuration enables devices to support both audio output and microphone input through a single jack, simplifying design and reducing the number of ports required.

TRRSstyle connectors are widely used in headphones with integrated microphones, allowing users to listen to music and make calls using the same headset. However, variations in TRRS wiring exist, most notably between the CTIA (Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association) standard and the OMTP (Open Mobile Terminal Platform) standard. These differences primarily concern the placement of the microphone and ground connections, which can lead to compatibility issues if a TRRS plug designed for one standard is used with a device expecting the other. Most modern consumer electronics adhere to the CTIA standard.
