TRNC

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, often abbreviated as TRNC, is a de facto state that comprises the northern portion of the island of Cyprus. It was declared in 1983 following a coup d'état in 1974 that was supported by the Turkish military, which intervened in response to a Greek Cypriot coup aimed at uniting the island with Greece. The TRNC is recognized only by Turkey. The rest of the international community considers the entire island of Cyprus to be under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Cyprus.

The TRNC has a parliamentary democratic republic system of government. Its capital and largest city is North Nicosia. The economy of the TRNC is largely dependent on tourism, higher education, and financial services, though it faces significant challenges due to its international isolation. Trade and travel are primarily conducted through Turkey.

The political status of the TRNC remains a contentious issue. Numerous United Nations resolutions have called for the establishment of a federal, bizonal, bicommunal republic of Cyprus, but various peace initiatives and negotiations have so far failed to achieve a lasting solution. The presence of Turkish troops in the north and the status of displaced persons from both communities are among the key obstacles to reunification. The population of the TRNC is predominantly Turkish Cypriot, with a significant number of Turkish immigrants and expatriates.
