TRIPSsopimukseen, which translates to the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights in Finnish, is a foundational international agreement administered by the World Trade Organization (WTO). It sets out the minimum standards of protection that WTO member governments must provide for intellectual property rights. These rights include copyrights, trademarks, patents, geographical indications, industrial designs, and trade secrets.

The primary goal of TRIPS is to promote and facilitate international trade by ensuring that intellectual property rights are adequately and uniformly protected across member countries. It seeks to prevent intellectual property rights from becoming an unnecessary obstacle to legitimate trade. The agreement mandates that WTO members provide national treatment and most-favored-nation treatment to intellectual property rights of other members.

This includes civil, criminal, and border enforcement measures. The agreement has significantly influenced the intellectual property laws of many countries, particularly developing nations, as they align their domestic legislation with TRIPS standards.
