TASDn

TASDn stands for Trusted Autonomous Sensor Data network. It is a hypothetical open-standard framework designed to enable secure, autonomous exchange of sensor data across distributed networks. The goal is to ensure data integrity and provenance while supporting real-time decision-making in sectors such as industrial IoT, smart cities, and environmental monitoring.

Architecturally, TASDn comprises edge sensor nodes, gateway devices, data hubs, a trust layer, and a policy engine. The data plane specifies standardized payload formats and routing mechanisms for time-stamped measurements, while the control plane handles node registration, authorization, and policy enforcement. A provenance layer records data lineage and attestations of data sources.

Data models emphasize time, location, units, and quality metadata. Payloads can use compact formats such as CBOR or JSON with optional semantic annotations via a lightweight ontology. Security and privacy are addressed through cryptographic attestations, decentralized identifiers, verifiable credentials, encryption in transit and at rest, and data minimization practices.

Governance is designed to be open and collaborative, drawing on existing standards for IoT security and data sharing. TASDn envisages bridges to established protocols such as MQTT, CoAP, and OPC UA, with mapping rules to support interoperability across heterogeneous networks.

Applications include industrial automation, utilities monitoring, transportation systems, and environmental surveillance. As of the mid-2020s, TASDn exists primarily as a proposed framework and reference model, with pilot implementations and draft specifications developed by academic and industry groups. Criticisms focus on complexity, resource demands, and the challenge of widespread adoption.
