Tüsistus refers to a traditional Estonian folk practice involving the use of protective charms, spells, or rituals to ward off evil spirits, misfortune, or illness. The term originates from the Estonian words *tüsi* (meaning "fire" or "ashes") and *sust* (meaning "to protect" or "to guard"), suggesting a connection to fire-based or ash-based protective measures. These customs were deeply rooted in pre-Christian Estonian beliefs and persisted alongside Christian influences for centuries.

Tüsistus practices often involved the creation of symbolic objects, such as small clay figurines, knots, or woven charms, which were believed to absorb negative energy or protect individuals and households. Fire played a central role, as burning certain plants, herbs, or objects was thought to purify spaces and drive away malevolent forces. For example, the ashes of burned rowan berries or juniper were sometimes sprinkled around homes or livestock to ensure protection.

Many tüsistus traditions were tied to seasonal cycles, such as the summer solstice or winter festivals, where rituals were performed to ensure fertility, health, and prosperity. Some charms were also used for personal protection, such as carrying a small pouch of protective herbs or tying knots in thread to bind misfortune. These practices were often passed down orally within families and communities, reflecting a blend of animistic and shamanistic beliefs.

With the spread of Christianity in Estonia, many tüsistus customs were suppressed or reinterpreted, though some elements survived in folk medicine and rural traditions. Today, tüsistus remains a subject of ethnographic study, offering insight into Estonia’s pre-Christian spiritual heritage and the resilience of traditional protective beliefs.
