Tørremaskiner, commonly known as tumble dryers, are household appliances designed to remove moisture from laundry items after they have been washed. They work by tumbling clothes in a heated drum, while air is circulated to evaporate the water. The moist air is then either vented outside the building through a hose or condensed into a water reservoir within the machine.

There are two primary types of tørremaskiner: vented and condenser dryers. Vented dryers are generally less expensive to purchase and operate but require an external vent to expel hot, humid air. Condenser dryers, on the other hand, do not need external venting as they collect the water in a removable container or drain it away. This makes them more versatile in terms of placement within a home. Heat pump dryers are a more energy-efficient subtype of condenser dryers, utilizing a heat pump system to recycle heat and reduce energy consumption significantly, though they typically have a higher initial cost.

Most modern tørremaskiner offer various drying programs tailored to different fabric types and desired dryness levels. These programs can include settings for cotton, synthetics, delicates, and timed drying. Features like sensor drying monitor the moisture content of the clothes and automatically stop the cycle when the laundry is dry, preventing over-drying and saving energy. Despite their convenience, tørremaskiner consume a considerable amount of electricity, and their use can contribute to higher energy bills. Regular cleaning of lint filters is crucial for efficient operation and to prevent fire hazards.
