Tähtäinkiikari

Tähtäinkiikari is a Finnish term that translates to "telescopic sight" or "scope" in English, commonly referring to an optical sighting device used on firearms. These sights enhance a shooter's ability to acquire and engage targets at greater distances by magnifying the target and providing a precise aiming point.

The basic principle of a Tähtäinkiikari involves a system of lenses that gather light and magnify an image. A reticle, also known as a crosshair or aiming point, is located within the scope, superimposed over the magnified image of the target. When the shooter aligns the reticle with the target, the firearm is effectively aimed at that point.

Tähtäinkiikarit come in various magnifications, ranging from fixed low-power sights suitable for close to medium ranges to variable-power scopes that allow the shooter to adjust magnification based on the distance to the target. They also differ in objective lens diameter, which affects light gathering ability and thus image brightness, particularly in low-light conditions.

Adjustments for windage (horizontal adjustment) and elevation (vertical adjustment) are crucial features of most Tähtäinkiikarit. These adjustments allow the shooter to compensate for projectile drop and wind drift, ensuring accuracy. The click value of these adjustments, often measured in MOA (Minute of Angle) or MRAD (Milliradian), indicates how much the point of impact shifts with each adjustment increment.
