Süütepoolid, also known as ignition coils, are essential components of an internal combustion engine's ignition system. Their primary function is to transform the low voltage from the vehicle's battery into the high voltage necessary to create a spark at the spark plug. This spark ignites the fuel-air mixture within the engine's cylinders, driving the combustion process.

Each cylinder in an engine typically has its own dedicated ignition coil, or a single coil may serve multiple cylinders (in a "wasted spark" system). The ignition coil is essentially a transformer consisting of two windings of wire: a primary winding and a secondary winding, both wrapped around a common iron core. When the engine control unit (ECU) sends a signal, it allows current to flow through the primary winding. This creates a magnetic field. When the ECU interrupts this current flow, the magnetic field collapses rapidly. This rapid collapse induces a much higher voltage in the secondary winding, which is then directed to the spark plug to generate the ignition spark.

Failures in ignition coils can lead to various engine performance issues, such as misfires, rough idling, reduced fuel efficiency, and a check engine light illumination. Diagnosing a faulty ignition coil often involves checking for spark at the plug or using specialized diagnostic tools. Replacement of a failed ignition coil is a common maintenance task for gasoline-powered vehicles.
