Süsihappegaasiga, commonly known as carbon dioxide (CO2), is a chemical compound consisting of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. It is a naturally occurring gas that plays a vital role in Earth's climate and the life cycles of plants and animals. In its gaseous form, CO2 is colorless and odorless, and it is denser than air.

CO2 is released into the atmosphere through various natural processes, including volcanic eruptions, the respiration of living organisms, and the decomposition of organic matter. Humans also contribute significantly to atmospheric CO2 levels through activities such as the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) for energy, deforestation, and industrial processes like cement production.

This gas is a key component of the greenhouse effect, a natural process that warms the Earth's surface. Sunlight passes through the atmosphere and heats the Earth. The Earth then radiates this heat back as infrared radiation. Greenhouse gases, including CO2, trap some of this outgoing heat, preventing it from escaping into space and thus keeping the planet warm enough to support life.

However, increased concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere due to human activities are enhancing the greenhouse effect, leading to global warming and climate change. This warming trend has been linked to rising sea levels, more frequent extreme weather events, and disruptions to ecosystems.

CO2 also has important industrial and commercial uses. It is used in carbonated beverages, as a refrigerant (dry ice), in fire extinguishers, and in various chemical processes. Plants utilize CO2 during photosynthesis, converting it into energy and releasing oxygen as a byproduct, making it essential for life on Earth.
