The word derives from saga, meaning story or saga, with the Icelandic adverbial suffix -lega, producing “in a saga-like manner.” The related adjective sögulegur (historical, saga-like) and the adverb sögulega are used in scholarly writing to label such techniques.

Sögulega features appear in contemporary novels, films, and digital media that seek to situate present-day life within a longer historical or legendary frame.
