Sõniliik refers to the part of speech in Estonian grammar. Like in many other languages, words are categorized based on their function and meaning within a sentence. The primary sõnaliigid in Estonian are nouns (nimisõnad), verbs (teksõnad), adjectives (omadussõnad), adverbs (määrsõnad), pronouns (asesõnad), numerals (arvsõnad), conjunctions (siduosad), prepositions (abistavad sõnad), interjections (hüüdsõnad), and particles (sidesõnad).

Nouns denote people, places, things, or ideas. Verbs express actions or states of being. Adjectives describe nouns. Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs, providing information about time, place, manner, or degree. Pronouns substitute for nouns. Numerals indicate quantity or order. Conjunctions connect words, phrases, or clauses. Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in the sentence, often indicating location or direction. Interjections are exclamations. Particles are small words that often add nuance or emphasis. Understanding sõnaliigid is crucial for constructing grammatically correct and meaningful Estonian sentences. Each sõnaliik has its own set of grammatical rules regarding declension, conjugation, and usage.
