Sõnavariant

Sõnavariant, also known as a word variant, refers to a different form of a word that shares the same root or base form. These variants can occur due to various linguistic processes such as inflection, derivation, or compounding. Sõnavariants are commonly found in many languages and serve different grammatical or semantic functions.

Inflectional sõnavariants are created through the modification of a word's form to express grammatical categories such as tense, number, case, or mood. For example, in English, the verb "walk" has inflectional sõnavariants like "walks," "walked," and "walking." In Estonian, the noun "koer" (dog) has inflectional sõnavariants like "koera" (genitive), "koerale" (allative), and "koeraga" (comitative).

Derivational sõnavariants are formed by adding prefixes, suffixes, or other affixes to a base form, often changing the word's part of speech or meaning. For instance, the English word "happy" can be derived from "happiness" by removing the suffix "-ness," and "unhappy" can be derived by adding the prefix "un-." In Estonian, the word "õpetaja" (teacher) can be derived from "õpetus" (teaching) by adding the suffix "-ja."

Compounding is another process that creates sõnavariants by combining two or more words to form a new word. For example, the English word "blackboard" is a compound of "black" and "board." In Estonian, the word "õpilane" (student) is a compound of "õppima" (to study) and "lane" (one who does something).
