Säätiöitä are foundations, a type of legal entity commonly found in Finland and other Nordic countries. A foundation is typically endowed with assets, which can include money, property, or other valuables, that are then used to fulfill the foundation's objectives. The founder or founders transfer ownership of these assets to the foundation, and they are managed by a board of trustees or directors. The foundation's activities are governed by its statutes and the relevant laws. The income generated from the foundation's assets, or from donations, is used to support its designated mission. Foundations are distinct from companies as they are not established for profit-making purposes, although they may generate income to sustain their operations. Their primary goal is to serve a public or private interest as defined in their founding documents. Foundations can operate in a wide range of fields, from supporting medical research and providing scholarships to preserving historical sites and promoting the arts.
