Sävykuvaus, meaning "tone description" in Finnish, refers to the process of analyzing and describing the color characteristics of a photograph or artwork. It goes beyond simply identifying colors and delves into their relationships, intensity, and emotional impact. This involves considering various aspects such as hue, saturation, and lightness.

Hue refers to the pure color itself, like red, blue, or green. Saturation describes the intensity or purity of that color, ranging from vivid and pure to muted and grayish. Lightness, also known as value, indicates how dark or light a color appears. Sävykuvaus examines how these elements interact within an image to create a particular mood or atmosphere.

A key aspect of sävykuvaus is understanding color contrasts. This can include complementary contrasts, where colors opposite each other on the color wheel are used, or analogous contrasts, where colors next to each other are employed.
