Säilöntätuotteet, known in English as preservatives, are substances added to products to prevent or retard spoilage caused by microorganisms such as bacteria, yeasts, and molds. In the food industry, preservatives play a crucial role in extending shelf life and ensuring food safety. Common examples include salt, sugar, vinegar, sorbates, benzoates, nitrites, and sulfites. These substances work by inhibiting microbial growth through various mechanisms, such as altering pH, reducing water activity, or directly interfering with microbial metabolism. Examples include parabens, formaldehyde releasers, phenoxyethanol, and organic acids. Regulatory bodies also set guidelines for the use of preservatives in cosmetics to protect consumer health.

Pharmaceuticals, especially liquid and semi-solid formulations, also require preservatives to maintain sterility and efficacy throughout their shelf life. These can include antimicrobial agents like benzalkonium chloride or chlorobutanol. The selection of preservatives for pharmaceuticals is critical to avoid interactions with active ingredients or adverse effects on patients.

Beyond consumer products, preservatives are also utilized in industrial applications to protect materials like wood, paints, and fuels from microbial degradation. These preservatives help maintain the integrity and functionality of these materials over time.
