Sähkösiirtoketju refers to the entire process and infrastructure involved in transmitting electrical energy from its point of generation to the end-user. This chain encompasses several critical components, beginning with power generation plants, where electricity is produced through various methods such as fossil fuels, nuclear power, or renewable sources like wind and solar.

From the generation site, the electricity enters the transmission system. High-voltage transmission lines, often supported by large towers, carry electricity over long distances with minimal loss. This high voltage is necessary to reduce current and consequently resistive losses in the conductors. Substations play a crucial role in this stage, housing transformers that step up or step down voltage levels as needed for efficient transport and distribution.

Following transmission, the electricity moves into the distribution system. Here, voltage levels are progressively reduced at smaller substations to make them suitable for local delivery. Distribution lines, typically found on utility poles or underground, then carry the electricity to homes, businesses, and industries. Finally, at the point of consumption, a service drop connects the distribution network to the individual premises, and a meter measures the electricity consumed by the end-user.
