Sähköjohtavuusmittarit, often referred to as conductivity meters, are instruments used to measure the electrical conductivity of a substance. This property is a key indicator of the concentration of dissolved ions in a solution, making these meters invaluable in various fields. In water quality monitoring, for example, they help assess the purity of drinking water, the salinity of natural water bodies, and the effectiveness of water treatment processes. In industry, conductivity meters are used to control the concentration of solutions in manufacturing, such as in electroplating baths, food and beverage production, and chemical processing. They can also be employed to detect leaks or impurities in pipelines.

The principle of operation for most sähköjohtavuusmittarit involves applying a voltage across two electrodes immersed in the sample. The amount of current that flows between the electrodes is directly proportional to the solution's conductivity. More conductive solutions allow more current to flow, while less conductive solutions impede current flow. Modern conductivity meters typically consist of a probe containing the electrodes and a display unit that shows the measured conductivity value, often in units of siemens per meter (S/m) or its sub-multiples like millisiemens per centimeter (mS/cm) or microsiemens per centimeter (µS/cm). Temperature compensation is a crucial feature, as conductivity is highly dependent on temperature. These devices are calibrated using standard solutions of known conductivity to ensure accuracy.
