Sähköfysiologin is a Finnish term that translates to "electrophysiologist" in English. This refers to a medical professional who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders, also known as arrhythmias. Electrophysiologists use a variety of diagnostic tools and procedures to understand the electrical activity of the heart and to identify the causes of irregular heartbeats.

Common diagnostic procedures performed by an electrophysiologist include electrocardiograms (ECGs), Holter monitoring, event monitoring, and electrophysiology studies (EPS). An EPS is a more invasive procedure where catheters are inserted into the heart to map its electrical pathways and induce arrhythmias under controlled conditions. This helps pinpoint the exact origin of the problem.

Treatment options offered by electrophysiologists depend on the specific arrhythmia and may include medications to regulate heart rate and rhythm, or more advanced interventions. These interventions can involve catheter ablation, where targeted energy is used to destroy small areas of heart tissue that are causing the abnormal electrical signals. In some cases, pacemakers or implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) may be implanted to help manage the heart rhythm. Electrophysiologists play a crucial role in managing patients with a wide range of cardiac electrical issues, from common palpitations to life-threatening arrhythmias.
